Workshop Topics: (tentative)

History:
We will journey back to the changing face of the Philippines in order to put a geographical “face” to the events that happened there. Through a multi-media presentation, we will convey a historical look of the Philippines in an attempt to look at the beauty of our country, giving it a place both geographically and historically.
Tools: Slide show media presentation

Intra Cultural Racism: “Welcome to….”
One of the most frequent talked about problems or issue in the communicate is RACISM. However, before looking outside your community to solve or resolve this problem, one must first look within one’s own community and evaluate the problem of racism. Intra-cultural racism is an exciting and growing problem in our Filipino Community. Dealing with pride and identity this workshop is designed to look at the constant barriers b/w newly arrive Filipinos, the Canadian born Filipinos, and those of bi-racial descent. Furthermore, this workshop will discuss anti-Filipinos and pro-Filipinos trying to answer a question that we should all be asking ourselves “ Do you feel at home in the Filipino community?”

Political Activism: “How can youth here make a difference in the Philippines concerning the political situation there?”
The Filipino youth in our community are often labelled as lazy, spoiled, thugs and the list can go on and on. This workshop presents views that there is something the youth can do to get involved. Furthermore, it will serve as an attempt to encourage Filipino youth in Canada to make a difference in the Philippines concerning the Political situation there regardless of the topics at hand. This however, is a three fold process involving the present situation in the Philippines and what has been done (past), what will be done (present) and what can be done( future).

Filipinos Discovering Sexuality:
The discovery of one’s sexuality is a very important aspect for youth in today’s society. The choices and obstacles faced are those of homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bi-sexuality. As a result many different views will be presented in order to encompass a full understanding in the Filipino perspective. Examining our parents taboos, and clinical information on sexuality are just an example of 2 perspectives that play a role in discovering a Filipino’s own sexuality. This discussion will incorporate an interaction of different views in a panel format.
